Diploma Program Description

This program provides them with the necessary foundation tools for them to become successful professionals in the Animation industry. Through a series of assignments, students will learn to bring life to two or three-dimensional digital characters to achieve sincere believable performances.

2) Combined (Online + Onsite)

Time is divided between online and onsite learning. Every Friday from 10am-1pm, students spend 3 hours with in-person sessions and interacting with their peers and Industry professionals.

High school graduate (with transcript), or 19 years of age or older

Assessment Test

Successfully pass general
assessment test that includes
a computer knowledge assessment,
Internet knowledge assessment,
English reading and writing skills


If no portfolio is submitted,

Study and Work in Canada

International Students have the option to study from their
home countries or within Canada.

Designated Learning Institution

This full-time online program meets the Ministry of Education requirements to Study and Work in Canada.  Students may study from their home countries or in Vancouver, Canada.  When studying in Vancouver, Canada,  all classes are conducted online and 20 hours per week of on-site lab access is available for students to interact with one another.

Program Outline

Animated Short Film Diploma

Term 1
Animated Film

Animated short film ideas are explored and developed. Students create and present several stories, along with supplemental visuals that result in a final story selection. The story is expanded visually from a pitch board into a comprehensive storyboard. The static storyboard transitions into a moving 2D Animatic

Duration: 3 months

Term 2

A finished 3D layout is assembled based on their 2D animatic. The 3D modeling and technical setup process is conducted to incorporate the student’s characters, props and their sets. Final dialogue and music is recorded and broken down for synchronous purposes. Blocking of character animation commences.

Term 3
Animated Film

Blocking of character animation key poses continues. Successful transitioning from and into the poses and actions before and after each scene to carry sequence flow. Addition of breakdown key poses to refine character’s actions, timing and arcs. Cleaning-up and polishing of animation commences. Bringing life to an animated character and obtaining a believable performance to support the story is the ultimate goal. Color studies of the character and the background are finalized through the completion of Color Scripting.

Duration: 3 months

Term 4
Animated Film

This course completes the production of a short 3D Animation film. Animation is finalized and polished to bring students storytelling abilities up to industry standards. Final textures and materials are applied to all models. 3D lighting is created for each scene. This final term includes the rendering and compositing of each scene. Animation Festivals are researched and studied for the entry guidelines, festival circuits, screenings, marketing materials including the professional opportunities and benefits available to filmmakers.

Duration: 3 months

Students must obtain a minimum grade of a B- to successfully pass.

Course codes: FILM-100,  FILM-200,  FILM-300,  FILM-400.

Post-Graduation Work Permit

While VANAS programs do not qualify for the post-graduation work permit, some of our educational partners do.
