Oscars Academy Awards 2018

With the 90th Academy Awards happing this weekend on March 4th in Hollywood, which awards are you most excited for? Is it Visual Effects or Best Picture or maybe the Actor/Actress in a Leading Role?

For us at Vancouver Animation School (VANAS), it would without a doubt be the Best Visual Effects and Animated Short Film award.

Best Visual Effects

The winner of last year’s Best Visual Effects award was The Jungle Book which bought the story of Mowgli and the jungle to life. This year’s nominees include:

Given the immense amount of depth in these nominees, it's quite hard to pick a winner. Among these top 5 movies, Star Wars:The Last Jedi and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 are both in the top 10 list of highest-grossing films of 2017 according to IMDB. The success of these movies can also be seen through the large Star Wars and Marvel fan bases that have grown over the years. While all the nominated movies showcase exceptional visual effects, watch out for Star Wars or Guardians of the Galaxy to take home the award.

Best Animated Feature Film

With Coco winning the 2018 Golden Globe for Best Animation Motion Picture, it seems like nothing can stop their momentum and winning this category at the Oscars. The other films nominated for this category are The Boss BabyThe Breadwinner, Ferdinand and Loving Vincent.

What's creating buzz around the Oscars?

kumailnanjiani vanas

The movie "The Big Stick" is nominated for Best Orignal Screenplay is creating quite some conversation and buzz this year. While many of you may know Kumail Nanjiani for his comedy on HBO's Silicon Valley as Dinesh, he is also the co-director for this movie alongside his wife/director Emily V. Gordon. As a Pakistani-American, he could be the first nominee of Asian-descent to win this category!

Another story that many people are talking about is Jordan Peele's nomination. As the director of the movie "Get Out" he is nominated for the Best Director Award. In the history of the Oscars, there have been five black directors nominated for this award but none were able to take home the award. Jordan can make history and become the first black director to win Best Director. In addition, the movie itself received two nominations: Best Picture and Best Orginal Screenplay.
