Concept Art: Aniva Leung

Being a concept artist has been my goal ever since I found out that there's a way to turn my hobby into a job.

Can you tell us a bit of your art background prior to VANAS?

I was a graphic artist for mobile games in Hong Kong for 5 years, mainly responsible in assets and UI design.

What were your motivations to take the program?

Being a concept artist has been my goal ever since I found out that there's a way to turn my hobby into a job. I decided to take the program to see if my skills are good enough to join the industry and what more I can do to improve it.

How has VANAS helped you?

I have learned how to actually tackle a design instead of staring at a blank canvas hoping for ideas to pop into my mind. I'm also faster at completing a drawing with all the little tips and tricks that the professors taught us.

Can you mention some A-ha! moments during your education?

I guess photobashing is one of the techniques that I never thought was a thing. Mashing many photos together to make a completely different scene is very impressive to me, and very time saving.

How do you compare your art skills before and after VANAS?

I'm certainly much faster in completing a piece now, and I am able to create more detailed concepts with the help of references. My painting skills also improved as I learned to paint different textures and the use of photobashing.

What is your favourite class/topic? (why?)

Color theory was my favorite topic because a good concept can be ruined by bad color themes. Also, different color themes can bring out different atmosphere of a same scene.

Is there anything you would like to add?

I'm a really passionate gamer, it's one of the few things that love as much as creating art. It is also my motivation in pursuing the job of a concept artist, so I can create worlds for other people to enjoy.
